History
The Kalgan II was the first of a class of eight vessels. As was usual minor modifications were incorporated in later vessels. The Kalgan II, Kweiyang II, Kiungchow and Kingyuan were built by Scotts Shipbuilding & Eng. At number 3 & 4 holds the decks were built over with accommodation and extra life boats installed. The Kaying, Kwangtung I and Kwangchow were built by Taikoo Dockyard & Eng. The Kiangsu was built by Caledon shipbuilding & Eng. Co., Dundee.
Sept 2nd.1937. Blown shore in Hong Kong during a typhoon - refloated.
Dec 12th.1941. Captured by the Japanese at Bangkok, renamed Nishi Maru
Nov 13th.1944. Bombed and sunk at Manila by U.S. aircraft. Position 14.31 N 120.55 W.
Service
The "K" class vessels operated a weekly Shanghai - Swatow - Hong Kong - Saigon - Bangkok service, being designed for the emigrant run to Thailand and Indo-China.
