The converter Template:Convert/tonne is a variation of {{Convert/t}} which defaults to converting a tonne into short tons labelled as just "tons" (rather than "short tons").

Usage:   {{convert|2|tonne}}              gives: 2 tonnes (2.2 tons)
{{convert|2|tonne|ST}}         gives: 2 tonnes (2.2 short tons)
{{convert|2|tonne|LT}}         gives: 2 tonnes (2.0 long tons)
{{convert|2|tonne|lb}}          gives: 2 tonnes (4,400 lb)
{{convert|3|tonne|lb|sp=us}}    gives: 3 metric tons (6,600 lb)

The default output as just "tons" is more appropriate when several conversions are made in an area of text, rather than repeating the phrase "short tons" over and over. Internally, the template uses the parameter "o=shton" to set the default conversion-output template as {{Convert/shton}}, instead of showing both the equivalent short and long tons, which would be 3 total amounts.

In American English, the word "ton" is typically considered a short ton, whereas in British English the word "ton" usually means a long ton.
