History

Built by Shanghai D.Y. Ltd (Mitsui Heavy Industries Ltd), Shanghai for Upper Yangtse use, launched 8/2/39 for China Nav. Co. Ltd and completed for Taikoo Chinese Nav. Co. Ltd, Shanghai (Br.). 9/39 t/f to Hong Kong. 12/41 comm. by RN at Singapore for conversion to patrol vessel. 12/2/42 stern and machinery sabotaged by RN in Keppel Drydock in Singapore - 15/2 wreck seized by Japanese r. 工船二号 KOSEN 2 GO (580 grt) and intended for use as a floating workshop. Later re-engined (probably ex gold dredge engines) and operated by Mitsubishi Kisen K.K on Singapore-Jakarta troop and supplies run. Retrieved postwar and scuttled by RN 1947, location unknown.

New C.N. Co. River Ship Launched Shanghai Feb. 9

The s.s. Wanyuan, the latest addition in the China Navigation Company Ltd’s fleet was launched yesterday by Mrs G.E. Mitchell, wife of the manager of Butterrfield & Swire. After the ship had been launched, Mr Kamoi, Chairman of Mitsui Heavy Industries Ltd, the constructors, proposed the toast of Wanyuan and after thanking Mrs Mitchell for performing the ceremony, in an apt speech wished the vessel successful trading. Mr. G.E. Mitchell responding on behalf of the owners expressed their appreciation of the efforts of the Japanese Consulate-General, H.I.J.M. Navy and the Mitsui Heavy Industries Ltd in cooperating towards the launching of the vessel. The vessel will augment the company’s fleet on the Upper Yangtze between Ichang and Chungking and is designed for service throughout the year. The s.s. Wanyuan has an overall length of 161 ft. 6 ins., moulded beam of 29 ft. 6 ins. And depth of 8 ft 9 ins. Her passenger accommodation consists of four double berth staterooms on the saloon deck and five double berth cabin class staterooms on the main deck embodying the latest comforts. A special feature is the provision of observation decks where full advantage can be taken of the interests provided by the rapids and gorges of the Upper Yangtze. The vessel is specially constructed for the carriage of wood oil in bulk and of heavy and bulky packages.
